HERBERT "BUTCH" KING NAMED FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR

Herbert “Butch” King was honored for his longtime commitment to the Canton Fire Department, which he joined 42 years ago.  Due to leave next month, King will be hard to replace, said Fire Chief Charles Doody.

Doody said King has been an integral part of the department’s emergency management, and has been responsible for the training recertification and continuing education of the department’s EMTs and paramedics since 1985.  He received the honor through a vote of his peers.

“He has bundles of energy, and he still runs around like a 24-year-old.  He’s a capable guy and I have never had to worry about the EMS department because of him,” Doody said.

A Tribute to Herbert “Butch” King, by Fire Chief Charles Doody

Butch King was appointed as an intermittent firefighter in 1968 and became a permanent firefighter in 1971.  He currently holds the distinction of being the senior firefighter (badge #1) at Canton Fire Department and will end his career July 31st after 42 years of service to the residents of Canton.  Butch served his country in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970 as a Sergeant in the United States Army.

Butch has been married for 22 years to his lovely wife Maryanne and has 3 beautiful daughters – Brandy (15), Misty (16) and Kasey (21).  He served as the Union President of Local 1580 for 20 years and Vice President for 4 years.  His focus during his tenure was the health and safety of his fellow firefighters and he became one of the most respected Union Presidents in the Commonwealth.

Butch became and EMT in 1974 and is considered the “founder” of Canton’s EMS Division.  He has been the driving force behind the evolution of the ambulance service taking it from transporting a patient in the back of a police car to its present day Advanced Life Support capability.  He has personally overseen the training, recertification and continued education of Canton’s EMT’s and Paramedics since Chief James Fitzpatrick appointed him as “EMT Coordinator” in 1985.

Butch has also been a key contributor to Canton’s Driver’s Education program since 1978, teaching students about the dangers of drinking and driving. He was also one of the early volunteers to help organize and chaperone the Canton High School “All-Night Graduation Party”.  He has instructed thousands of nurses, teacher and citizens in CPR and First Aid. More importantly, he was the point man on the acquisition of the Town’s Community Defibrillator Program.  Because of his efforts, there defibrillators located in all public schools and most of our town buildings.

Perhaps Butch’s greatest quality is his loyalty to the Canton Fire Department and to the people of Canton. Self-interest has never been a motive for Butch King. He is man of action whose decisions have always been based on the benefit to the community. His enthusiasm for the job remains as strong today as it was 42 years ago.  He continues to serve as a positive role model for both our new and veteran firefighters.  His talents, commitment and love for the job will not be easily replaced.

The Only Safe Ice Is At  The Metropolis Rink

Lt. John Hutchinson

Canton Firefighters would like to remind everyone, especially children the danger of unsafe ice. A Middleboro father lost his life last year after falling thru unsafe ice.  Not one of  Canton ’s lakes or ponds is safe right now. They have started to freeze over but remain unsafe. The temperature fluctuating above and below freezing makes ice conditions very uncertain.

How thick is “safe” ice ?

Ice on moving rivers, streams and brooks is never safe. The thickness of ice on ponds and lakes depends upon water current or springs, depths and natural objects such as tree stumps or rocks. Daily temperature changes cause the ice to expand and contract, which affects its strength. Because of these factors, no one can declare ice to be absolutely “safe”. Because of the uncertainty of ice conditions The Canton Fire Department will not endorse the safety of lakes, ponds,  streams, or rivers.

Ice Safety Tips

·       Never go onto the ice alone.

·       Always keep your pet on a leash. If a pet falls through the ice do not attempt to rescue your pet, go for help.

·       Beware of ice covered with snow. Snow can insulate ice and keep it cold, but can also keep it from freezing

·       Slush is a danger sign, indicating that the ice is no longer freezing from below.

·       Ice on moving water is generally 15% weaker.

·       Ice seldom freezes or thaws at a uniform rate. Ice can be 1 foot thick, and be 1 inch thick less than 10 feet away.

What to do if someone falls through the ice

·       Act quickly and call 911  for help. Canton Firefighters are properly trained and equipped to respond

·       Do not go on the ice. Many would be rescuers become victims themselves.

·       Reach-Throw-Go. If a companion falls through the ice throw them something, a rope, jumper cables, tree branch etc.

If this does not work go for help before you become a victim. Get medical attention for the victim immediately

By following safety procedures you can be safe and enjoy the outdoors. Remember the only safe ice is at the rink.

Canton Fire Department Wants to Keep You Safe and Warm This Winter

As the temperature outside drops, Canton families take to the indoors to keep safe and warm. What they may not realize is that turning up the heat can increase the risk of home heating fires.

In 2007, 18% of all building fires in Massachusetts were caused by heating equipment, and was one of the leading cause of fires in the home during winter months

While these numbers are frightening, nearly all of these fires are preventable. We can reduce the number of home heating fires in our community by taking some simple precautions and using heating equipment properly.

The National Fire Protection Association, and The Canton Fire Department recommend some simple home heating safety tips, so residents can help keep our community safe and warm this winter.

·         Space heaters need space. Keep all things that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture, at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.

·         Turn portable heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.

·         Plug power cords only into outlets with sufficient capacity and never into an extension cord.

·         Inspect for cracked, frayed or broken plugs or loose connections. Replace before using.

·         Have your chimney inspected each year and cleaned if necessary.

·         Use a sturdy fireplace screen.

·         Allow ashes to cool before disposing. Dispose of ashes in a metal container.

·         Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the best protection interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home — when one sounds, they all sound. Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

·         Install and maintain a carbon monoxide alarm in a central location outside each sleeping area.

·         Never use an oven to heat your home.

·         For fuel assistance, contact the National Fuel Funds Network at 1-202-824-0660.

·         The sale and use of unvented kerosene heaters is illegal in Massachusetts
